What are you smearing on your face?

Trying to determine whether a foundation or moisturizer contains carcinogens (cancer causing compounds) or other bad ingredients has always been a struggle. Even having a science degree has not helped me much in making sure the creams and makeups I smear on my body are harmless, the chemical names are confusing and more than a mouthful. Finally, there is some light being shed on this issue by the Environmental Working Group (www.ewg.org).

I want to mention the release of EWG’s Skin Deep app. This amazing program allows you to look up your beauty and hygiene products to see if they contain anything that may cause you harm. When an item is searched it is rated 0-10, 0 being innocuous and 10 being something you shouldn’t slather on your skin.

This is a new app and you may find that some of the countless companies and products are not catalogued, but their database will only grow.

The issue for me now is to try to replace these high carcinogenic and reprotoxicity (not good for people still developing, such as fetuses, babies, and children) products without breaking the bank.
I have ordered some foundation from the Zuii Organics website; they claim to be an organic company that incorporates mostly flower oils and extracts (www.zuiiorganic.com). Who doesn’t want flowers on their face? Look for swatches coming soon!
